Always on the lookout for the next big thing, immersive audio has superseded loudness as the most exciting current audio technology. The main driving force is found on the visual side, with stereoscopic movies and VR becoming mainstream. Like so many 'inventions', 3D audio is nothing new. And like so often, the devil lies in the detail. In this talk, an overview will be given of the most promising 3D audio technologies with emphasis on their practical usability. The widespread confusion concerning these diverse techniques will be clarified with a systematic approach, distinguishing between recording, distributing and replaying/reconstructing. In the end, the audience will (again) realise: there is nothing like a free lunch...
